Whitney Dirks trained as an academic historian and earned her PhD in 2013. She picked up embroidery in 2019, in order to teach a hands-on history class, and she added machine sewing to her repertoire the following summer. Beyond the studio, Whitney writes about weird history and medicine, and in turn, bodies and anatomy influence her art.
Whitney Dirks is a self-taught magpie who is drawn to bright colors and old things. She loves rooting through other people’s trash at thrift stores, discovering and stockpiling treasures for later use. Her recent work repurposes woolen coats into polychromatic sculptures with embroidered elements, resulting in weird creatures with distinct personalities.
